Our Founder at a Glance
Michael Osteen, MBA is an accomplished value investor and a successful serial entrepreneur who brings a very unique perspective to value investing unlike many others.
Mr. Osteen is the Founder & Chief Investment Strategist, for Port Wren Capital, LLC in this role he conducts the investment research for our subscribers and manages the private equity portfolio. His quotes and tips appear in: U.S. News & World Report, YAHOO! FINANCE, Washington's Top News, Newsday, Fit Small Business, Taking Stock, in addition to other publications. His published articles are featured in numerous investment venues including MarketWatch, Meridian Energy Group Inc., Investopedia, and Seeking Alpha among others. Mr. Osteen writes our monthly investment newsletter, The Contrarian NewsletterSM and is a former investment columnist for The Island News newspaper covering the greater Beaufort County in South Carolina that includes Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort.
He also has spoken to the Savannah CFO Council, various chapters of The American Association of Individual Investors (AAII), The University of South Carolina, The Citadel's the Bastin Financial Lab, The Kiwanis Club, and other organizations. And he has appeared on WHHI-TV's Talk of the Town in Hilton Head, SC.
Moreover, Mr. Osteen is a member of the Sea Island Rotary Club of Beaufort, Lady's Island Business & Professional Association, and the Savannah CFO Council. And has been inducted as an Ambassador in the Greater Bluffton Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Osteen holds a Masters in Business Administration from Rivier University in New Hampshire, as well as, a Bachelors of Science degree with Honors from Clemson University in South Carolina and he completed two years of post-baccalaureate work in Accounting with a 3.92 GPA.
Value Investing Research - Our Story
Mr. Osteen bought his very first stock in 1980 and sold it when he made a 100% profit. Little did he know at the time, he had a special skill for seeing "special situation" investments and understanding that; as an investor, you don't need to know everything about the entire stock market, but only something that most other investors don't know. He had a close brother that starting investing when he was in high school who introduced him to value investing and Benjamin Graham. Although his brother was more of a dividend investor and did not have Mr. Osteen's insight into event driven opportunities, he learned many valuable lessons about investing over the years. Upon his brother's passing, Mr. Osteen went from an occasional investor to a more active investor using many of the tools and skills learned and practiced over the years. Today, Mr. Osteen uses the same research to invest his own personal capital and then offers that research to others as a dedication to his brother's memory. We are located in the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina in Beaufort. Situated near Bluffton and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Yet with close proximity to Charleston and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Savanna, Georgia. Mr. Osteen himself is from the Upstate. He was born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina which is not far from Clemson and Greenville. Many of our clients are located across South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia since our subscription service is web based and allows clients to be located anywhere as long as they have access to the Internet.
